Alec Brent National Bronze Medalist – Legion 2022!

Congratulations to Burnaby Striders’ Alec Brent, who travelled all the way to Sherbrooke, Quebec in early August 2022 to compete at the Legion National U16/U18 Track & Field Championships. Alec ended up capturing Bronze in the high jump for U18 at a height of 1.90m!

Legion has been hosting these championships for over 50 years and they’ve been actively supporting youth athletics in training and competition coast to coast. The Championships bring out the best across the country, which makes Alec’s accomplishment extremely impressive.

Well done, Alec! Great to see all your hard work and dedication pay off with such a fantastic result!

Congratulations to see Ellie, Melia, Willa, Vivienne, Harrison, Rya and Brora all show up and gave it everything they had. Fantastic to see many multi-event entries too. Special shout out to top placements:

  • Ellie for ranking 4th in the 100m and 7th place in the 200m.
  • Willa for ranking 4th in the 200m, 5th in the 100m, 7th in the High Jump and Long Jump.

Message: In Memory of Winston Reckord

It is with deep sadness that we share with you the passing of Winston Reckord this past week. He left us peacefully on December 13, 2021, at the age of 80 and is survived by his wife Evadne, his children and grandchildren.

Winston has been a foundation of Burnaby Striders for decades and has built countless friendships with athletes, coaches, parents, and many others in the track & field community. He has established for himself an unwavering reputation and has garnered respect from many who know him. Winston’s main focus was always about the athletes and helping them be the best they can be. We will sorely miss Winston’s presence at Burnaby Striders but would like to take this opportunity to honour him and thank him and his family for the dedication and commitment he’s given to all of us.

We would like to share with you Winston’s online obituary. Please click here and you can leave your comments for the family and also make a donation to the BC Cancer Foundation. More details can be found on the website.

Winston, on behalf of your Burnaby Striders family, we thank you for everything! We love you, and may you rest in peace!

REMINDER: 2021 Training Ends Sept 30, 2021

As a reminder that our 2021 training schedule will end on September 30, 2021. Traditionally, we hold our Fall & Winter training indoors at Burnaby South Secondary school between the months of October through to March. But like last year, indoor facilities have been limited and/or restricted due to COVID-19. As a result, we have not been able to secure our facility for indoor use this year. Burnaby Striders will remain closed during the off-season and will look to re-open again for training starting in March 2022. Further updates and details will be shared early next year. Until then, please do continue to stay safe and remember to always stay active!

BC JD Challenge Wraps – Zone 3/4 July 17, 2021

With an extremely challenging year and a half, it was so refreshing to see our young athletes out again competing and having fun. This past weekend was the BC JD Challenge track meet, held in Abbotsford, BC. This event was organized in place of the traditional annual BC Athletics JD Championship and was exclusive to the Zone 3 & 4 athletes only.

Burnaby Striders had a terrific showing with majority attending for the first time and all going home with personal best times! The final meet results are now posted and can be viewed by clicking here.

It’s always exciting, as every run produces an official performance time and can be used as building blocks for the future. Congratulations to all who attended and we look forward to seeing you back at training through the rest of this summer! Please check out a few pictures  (click here) from this past weekend!

As a note, the U16 and older groups will have their respective Regional track meet this coming weekend on July 24-25, 2021. We will be sure to share more soon!
