JD BC Championship in South Surrey!

BC Athletics Junior Development Championship was held this past weekend in South Surrey, in very hot and sunny weather. A terrific turnout, with some excellent representation from our JD athletes. Over 16 top 8 placements, with special congratulations to Addy Benefield and Andre Meltzer who both captured GOLD – 800m for Addy (2006) and Andre (2009) taking it for both the 60m and 100m events.

Other notable medalist is Joe Georgilas (2007), who secured SILVER in the Long Jump and a BRONZE in the Javelin. Striders also had a 4X100m Boys’ Relay Team represent in the 2006 category, with a 3rd overall placement to end the day.

Fantastic effort by all and huge congratulations on working so hard all season long. We look forward to seeing all of the great success carry over into 2020!

BC Championship Jamboree in Kamloops!

Burnaby Striders represented well at this past weekend’s BC Championship Jamboree held in Kamloops, BC. Rachel Roberts, Marisa Mazziotti & Brandon Hsu represented in the U16 category and Katelyn Malmquist competed in the U18 grouping. Every year, the Jamboree attracts athletes from across the province, with a special addition this year from the Australian national team! It was a weekend of rain & sunshine, with the athletes giving it their all to claim provincial rankings and to also strive for a chance to qualify for Team BC at this year’s National meet.

Five top ten finishes with Rachel, Marisa and Katelyn all making it as top 10 finalists for the 200m, with Rachel also representing in the top 10 for the 300m. Marisa landed in 8th spot for the Long Jump and Katelyn captured 10th in the Shot Put throw.

Special shout out to Brandon, who had personal best times in all of his races, capturing triple GOLD in the 100m, 200m and 300m dash!

TD Plays with Burnaby Striders!

Once again, we extend our deepest appreciation for TD Bank in generously donating $500 to Burnaby Striders. Big THANKS goes out to Lolita Lo, Branch Manager of the Burnaby Center branch at 1933 Willingdon Ave, and her entire team for contributing towards the development of our youth athletics.

Being a not-for-profit organization, every bit of financial support goes a long way for us being able to continue offering the training, coaching and facilities needed to help deliver top end performance at all levels. We look forward to seeing great results coming from our young athletes this year.

Thank you again, Lolita and TD, for your commitment to the community and it’s people!

Striders represented Universally!

Thirteen Striders’ athletes nabbed 14 medals at this weekend’s 6th Annual Universal Track Meet in Surrey. The last big meet of the season before the Championship finale in July. Excellent weather with some outstanding personal bests. Some notable podium finishers:

Gold: Sanghoon Lee (U18 Triple Jump), Brandon Hsu (U16 100m, 200m, 300m, Long Jump), AJ Meltzer (100m 2009), Cole Pagliaro (60m 2009)

Silver: Marisa Mazziotti (U16 Long Jump), Vasilios Georgilas (100m 2006), Joe Georgilas (2007 Javelin), Cole Pagliaro (100m 2009), Katelyn Malmquist (U18 200m)

Bronze: Sanghoon Lee (U18 Long Jump), Alexander Kenchington (2008 Javelin)

Striders in the Home Stretch!

We are in the peak of track season, with nine meets under our belts and a few more to go – as our athletes strive towards the July Championships. Our young runners and jumpers have racked up an impressive 33 podium finishes thus far! Congratulations to the great effort put forth by all and the dedication in training … it’s paying off!

Special shout out to Katelyn Malmquist, Brendan Lim, Sheldon Dacon & Brandon Hsu who made it to the BC High School Provincials and proudly represented their schools. Well done in a very competitive field! For full results on all the track meets, please visit our Results page here.

There are just a handful of track meets upcoming, so please check out the Meet Schedule and register where you can. It all culminates to the Junior Development (JD) Championships in Surrey and the Jamboree (U16+) in Kamloops. Train hard and good luck to everyone!

Spring Training Kicks Off April 1, 2019!

Practices will resume on Monday, April 1, 2019 at 6:00pm at Burnaby Central Secondary School – Outdoor Track, 6011 Deer Lake Parkway, Burnaby BC.

Outdoor practices will be held four days a week from Monday – Thursday evenings 6:00pm-9:00pm – April 1st through to July 25th. The Junior Development athletes usually only practice until 8:00pm.

Outdoor practices run rain or shine so come prepared!

2019 Kicks Off @ Harry Jerome Indoor Meet!

2019 season kicked off with Harry Jerome’s Indoor Track meet held at the Richmond Olympic Oval this past weekend. We had both Addy Benefield and Brandon Hsu out representing Burnaby Striders amongst 400+ other athletes – with terrific showings from both.

Addy Benefield competed in the 600m Women’s (13 year old) Event and received GOLD in her track debut with a time of 1:45.28. This was less than a second off breaking the Harry Jerome indoor record of 1:44.46! What a performance!

Brandon clocked in his 60m U16 dash at 7.59s, and he came less than two-tenths of a second from also breaking the indoor meet record! Very strong showing, earning him GOLD in the 60m and a close SILVER in the 300m.

Well done to both and looking to seeing more successes from our Striders’ athletes in the coming few months!

Shiloh Corrales-Nelson Signed with University of California – Riverside!

Our very own Burnaby Striders’ Shiloh Corrales-Nelson has officially signed and committed to the University of California – Riverside on both an athletic & academic scholarship as their multi thrower in the Shot Put, Hammer Throw and Discus!

Since joining Striders in 2012, Shiloh has consistently ranked tops in our province and her hard work and dedication to the sport has been widely recognized. We are extremely proud of her and her family for this outstanding achievement, and look forward to seeing all of her future successes.

Year End Reminders

A couple of important reminders before year end. Our final indoor track practice, before the holidays, will be held on Thursday, December 13, 2018. We will resume indoor training on Tuesday, January 8, 2019. Practices will continue at Burnaby South Secondary.

As well, for those planning to renew their membership for 2019, please ensure you renew before December 31, 2018. Starting in the new calendar year, membership fees will be increasing. More details about registration fees will be posted in January. But until then, take advantage of the lower rates.

Congratulations to Joe @ the 2018 BC Athletics JD Award Banquet!

Congratulations to our own Joe Georgilas who attended this year’s Junior Development Awards Banquet in October. Joe had an outstanding year and managed to meet standards for both the 60m Dash (8.67s) and the Long Jump (4.59m). This is no easy feat, and as a result, received the BC Athlethics JD Award for his performance.

Well done, Joe! Looking forward to seeing you continue your success in 2019!
